The cheeky, inquisitive nature of the world's only mountain parrot is well-known throughout New Zealand.

Highly intelligent and social, they learn from their parents and from experience. They love the challenge of taking things apart, which can be a problem if they take a liking to your car or motorbike!

To keep their minds and bodies stimulated, our keepers present their food in unusual ways, such as hidden underground, in a box of stones and leaves or dangling from a branch.

Through the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund, Auckland Zoo supports the conservation efforts of the Kea Conservation Trust.

A ticket for you. A puzzle for the kea.

Did you know that Kea are as smart as toddlers? And just like toddlers, they need things to stimulate their active brains. To keep their minds and bodies stimulated, how their food is presented is just as important as the food itself. Our keepers will hide seeds, fruits, nuts and their favourite treat – popcorn in a bamboo feeder, just like this one!

Come celebrate our 100 year birthday and visit the kea in Whenua Waotu (The High Country) habitat. A ticket for you is a gift for wildlife.
